Trump promises change from ‘very, very bad’ time for military

President Trump pledged to improve conditions for the American military on Saturday, saying the armed services have gone through a “very, very bad time.”

“It’s been a very, very bad period of time for our military,” Trump said at the commissioning of the USS Gerald Ford, which is the Navy’s newest aircraft carrier.

After presenting himself as an antidote to the years under former President Obama, Trump went on to press Congress to pass a budget.

“That is why we reached a deal to secure an additional $20 billion for defense this year and it’s going up. And I asked Congress for another $54 billion for next year,” he continued.

“Now we need Congress to do its job and pass the budget that provides for higher, stable and predictable funding levels for our military needs, that our fighting men and women deserve,” he said. 

Trump went on to showcase “American might,” and looked to send a signal to enemies abroad. 

“American might is second to none. And we’re getting bigger and better and stronger everyday of my administration,” the president said. 

“Wherever this vessel cuts through the horizon, our allies will rest easy and our enemies will shake with fear because America is coming and America is coming strong,” Trump said. 

“When it comes to battle we don’t want a fair fight. We want just the opposite. We demand victory and we will have total victory, believe me,” he continued. 

The president’s military praise comes just hours after he issued several tweets on an array of topics including healthcare, leaks against the administration and his son’s emails. He also tweeted about his plans to attend the commissioning

He went on to accuse The New York Times of foiling a U.S. attack against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria’s leader, and said the publication had a “sick agenda” that harms U.S. national security.
