China urges N. Korea not to conduct missile, nuclear tests
China is reportedly urging North Korea to stop its missile and nuclear tests in the wake of a United Nations Security Council vote to increase sanctions on Pyongyang.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said while meeting with North Korea’s top diplomat that the country should “maintain calm,” The Associated Press reported.
“Do not violate the U.N.’s decision or provoke international society’s goodwill by conducting missile launching or nuclear tests,” Wang added.
Susan Thornton, the top U.S. diplomat for Asia, also said it’s important China is “continuing to implement fully the sanctions regime,” according to the news service.
{mosads}The comments come after the United Nations Security Council voted Saturday to impose new sanctions against North Korea in retaliation for the government’s recent intercontinental ballistic missile tests.
In recent weeks, President Trump has gone after China for not doing more to rein in Pyongyang.
Late Saturday, the White House said Trump “commends” the security council for passing the resolution and praised China for its cooperation.
“The President appreciates China’s and Russia’s cooperation in securing passage of this resolution,” the press secretary’s office said in a statement.
