Al Gore: Trump ‘can’t be blamed’ for North Korean crisis

Former Vice President Al Gore says President Trump “can’t be blamed” for the tensions between the U.S. and North Korea.

“I think it’s only fair to point out he inherited this crisis,” Gore told Newsweek on Friday. “The previous three presidents were not able to find an adequate solution, so he can’t be blamed for all of this.” 

But Gore also took issue with Trump’s comments on Tuesday that if North Korea continued to threaten the U.S. it would “be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.”

Gore told Newsweek that Trump’s “intemperate comments on North Korea were really unwise.”

Trump’s comments came after North Korea conducted more ballistic missile tests and amid reports that the country can now fit a miniaturized nuclear device on a missile.

In response to Trump’s warnings, North Korea threatened to launch medium-range missiles into waters around the U.S. territory of Guam.

Trump doubled down on his previous comments Thursday, saying that his warnings against North Korea “may not be tough enough.”

Gore said he hoped Trump’s senior advisers stressed caution.

“He has a secretary of defense and national security adviser, both of whom are immensely respected,” Gore said. “I hope he will listen to them, and I hope their cooler heads will prevail.”
