Trump shares condolences for victims in Charlottesville

President Trump shared his condolences for the three victims near Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday who died after a white nationalist rally turned violent.

Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe (D) confirmed Saturday night that at least three people were killed.

One of the three died after a car mowed down a group of counter-protesters. The two other victims were Virginia State Police Department officers who were in a helicopter that crashed nearby.

{mosads}”Deepest condolences to the families & fellow officers of the VA State Police who died today. You’re all among the best this nation produces,” Trump tweeted.

“Condolences to the family of the young woman killed today, and best regards to all of those injured, in Charlottesville, Virginia. So sad!” he later tweeted referring to the woman who was hit by a car.

The University of Virginia Health System said 20 people were brought to the hospital Saturday afternoon after a car plowed into a group of people protesting against the white nationalists near a popular pedestrian mall in the college town. One died and the rest were being assessed and treated for injuries.

The incident came after McAuliffe had declared a state of emergency for the city after clashes between white nationalist and Nazi groups and counter-protesters.

Video posted on social media shows a car careening through the crowd as another vehicle rams into its rear bumper before backing away. In other photos and videos posted online Saturday, people can be seen being treated for injuries.

The helicopter crash happened a few miles outside of Charlottesville and it was not immediately clear what caused the crash.

Virginia State Police said Saturday that the helicopter crashed in a wooded area near a home around 5 p.m. The crash is being investigated and it is unclear if it was tied to nearby protests.
