Gary Cohn ‘disgusted’ and ‘upset’ by Trump’s Charlottesville comments: report

National Economic Council Director Gary Cohn is said to be deeply dismayed by President Trump’s statements in the wake of the violence at a white supremacist demonstration in Charlottesville, Va.

The New York Times White House correspondents Maggie Haberman and Glenn Thrush tweeted Tuesday that Cohn is upset with the president’s comments over the past four days, but is not planning to leave the administration.

Cohn is considered among the more moderate voices in Trump’s White House.

During a heated press conference Tuesday, Trump defended himself against criticism that he was slow and vague in condemning the violence that erupted in Charlottesville over the weekend and resurrected his previous claim that “both sides” were responsible for turning the protests bloody.

The president’s comments came just a day after he denounced racism and hate groups, which he called “repugnant to everything we hold dear as Americans.”

Trump faced a torrent of criticism over the weekend for his failure to call out the white nationalist and neo-Nazi groups that incited violence at the demonstrations on Saturday and for instead blaming “many sides” for the mayhem that left one counterprotester dead and dozens more injured.
