Poll: Trump job approval hits new low in wake of Charlottesville comments
President Trump’s job approval rating has reached a new low following his response to violent clashes at a white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, Va., according to a new survey.
A Politico/Morning Consult poll finds just 39 percent of voters surveyed approve of the job Trump is doing.
Forty-four percent said they approved of Trump’s job performance in the same poll a week ago.
{mosads}The poll out Wednesday finds 56 percent of voters disapprove of the job Trump is doing.
Trump faced bipartisan backlash for his comments regarding Charlottesville.
During a press conference last week, Trump said there is “blame on both sides” for the deadly violence in Virginia, where one died and 19 more were injured when a car was driven into a group of counterprotesters. The alleged driver of the vehicle, James Alex Fields Jr., was in Charlottesville attending the white supremacist rally.
Trump then defended his response to the violence in Charlottesville during an rally in Phoenix late Tuesday.
Thirty-seven percent of voters in the new poll think Trump’s reaction to the violent clashes was appropriate, compared to 46 percent who think it was inappropriate.
Pollsters also found that 43 percent of voters surveyed think the white supremacists should be blamed for the violence that occurred in Virginia.
Another 36 percent think both the white nationalists and the counter protesters deserve equal blame for the violence.
The poll was conducted from Aug. 17 to 19 among 1,987 registered voters. Its margin of error is 2 percentage points.
