Trump hosting world leaders at UN to discuss reforms: report

President Trump will seek to rally support for reforming the United Nations ahead of his planned address before the global body next month. 

Reuters reported Friday that Trump will hold an event on Sept. 18, a day before he is expected to formally address the U.N. in New York. 

Leaders will reportedly be invited to attend that event if they sign on to a declaration supporting U.N. Secretary-General António Guterres’s efforts “to initiate effective, meaningful reform.”

“We support the secretary-general in making concrete changes in the United Nations system to better align its work on humanitarian response, development and sustaining peace initiatives,” the draft declaration reads, according to Reuters.

{mosads}“We commit to reducing mandate duplication, redundancy and overlap, including among the main organs of the United Nations,” it adds.

Trump has long decried the United States’ outsize spending on the international organization and has derided it as ineffective, though earlier this year he called the amount spent by the U.S. “peanuts compared to the important work” it does.

The U.S. is the U.N.’s largest contributor, providing about $3.3 billion a year between the body’s core budget and its international peacekeeping efforts. 

Trump and U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley are set to meet with Guterres at the Sept. 18 function, Reuters reported.
