Trump to hold fourth Cabinet meeting Saturday during Irma landfall

President Trump will hold the fourth full meeting of his Cabinet on Saturday, just as Hurricane Irma makes landfall in Florida.

The White House press office said Friday that Trump has invited all members of his Cabinet and their spouses to Camp David for the meeting over the weekend, which will address the devastation caused by Hurricanes Harvey and Irma.

“President Donald J. Trump and First Lady Melania Trump have invited all members of the cabinet and their spouses to Camp David this weekend,” the White House said in a statement. “President Trump will hold his fourth cabinet meeting on Saturday and will lead discussion on the administration’s priorities in addition to receiving briefings on Hurricane Harvey recovery efforts and preparations for Hurricane Irma.”

Irma was upgraded to a Category 5 hurricane, the strongest kind, earlier in the week, but has since been downgraded to Category 4. The National Weather Service reported sustained winds of 150 mph Friday morning, and was urging evacuations along the storm’s route.

States of emergency have been declared for Florida, South Carolina, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico. On Friday, Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) warned residents that Irma will likely travel through the center of the state and urged them to evacuate.

“It’s a massive storm, it can be devastating,” Scott said Friday. “It’s gonna be way bigger than [1992’s Hurricane] Andrew.”

“We cannot save you in the middle of the storm,” he added.

Irma is one of three hurricanes currently threatening the Gulf region. Hurricane Katia, which is expected to strike Mexico later this week, strengthened to a Category 2 storm on Friday while a storm in the Atlantic, Jose, strengthened to a Category 4.

Irma will be the second hurricane to sweep through the U.S. in recent weeks, after Hurricane Harvey made landfall in southeast Texas and later Louisiana, leaving a trail of devastation.

So far, at least 18 people have died from Irma, and an official in St. Martin said 95 percent of the island was destroyed after the storm hit earlier this week.
