Spicer hires lawyer for Russia probe: report

Former White House press secretary Sean Spicer has allegedly hired a lawyer to represent him on matters related to Robert Mueller’s special counsel investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

The Daily Beast reported on Tuesday that Spicer has hired D.C.-based criminal defense attorney Chris Mead to represent him as Mueller’s investigation progresses.

Mead, according to his bio page, specialized in “white collar criminal prosecutions” during his time as assistant U.S. attorney for the District of Maryland. He has also represented congressional staffers in “public corruption and election law violations.”

{mosads}Spicer’s decision to hire a lawyer comes just days after it was reported that the former press secretary kept detailed notes throughout the presidential campaign that have drawn the interest of Mueller and his team of prosecutors.

The Washington Post also reported earlier this month that Mueller and his team will likely interview Spicer in the coming weeks. The White House was reportedly in the process of creating a legal defense fund for allies of the administration earlier this year, but it is unclear if Spicer will benefit from that fund.

That news came as it was reported that Mueller was seeking to interview six current and former Trump aides, including new White House communications director Hope Hicks, who served under Spicer.

Spicer resigned as White House press secretary in July over the hiring of Anthony Scaramucci as White House communications director. Ten days later, Scaramucci resigned after a profanity-laden interview with The New Yorker.
