President Trump on Tuesday tweeted his congratulations to Roy Moore for his victory in the Republican Alabama Senate primary.
“Congratulations to Roy Moore on his Republican Primary win in Alabama. Luther Strange started way back & ran a good race. Roy, WIN in Dec!” Trump tweeted.
{mosads}Trump had initially tweeted the same message, but with the wrong month for the election, telling Moore to “WIN in Nov!” He later deleted that tweet.
The Alabama special election to fill Attorney General Jeff Sessions’s Senate seat will take place on Dec. 12.
Moore decidedly defeated Sen. Luther Strange (R-Ala.) in the GOP primary for the race. Trump had endorsed Strange, making this his first electoral loss since taking office.
Trump traveled to Alabama to campaign for Strange, but wondered on stage during a rally if he made a “mistake” in backing Strange. Trump also promised to support Moore if he won the primary.
Moore earned the support of key anti-establishment conservatives like Breitbart News head Stephen Bannon. His win raises questions for establishment Republicans over the future of their party.
