Mnuchin dodges on if Trump would benefit from his tax proposal

Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Sunday dodged a question about whether President Trump would get a tax cut under his tax plan.

During an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Mnuchin was asked whether Trump would benefit from his new tax proposal. Trump has faced the question numerous times since he began to push for the tax code reform, which he claims is not helpful for his own finances.

Trump has not released his personal tax returns, so the impact is unclear.

“The objective of the president is that rich people don’t get tax cuts,” Mnuchin said.

“And we’re perfectly comfortable, as we go through this process, we’ll explain to the American public how that works and we’ll give plenty of examples.”

Mnuchin said Trump’s goal is to create middle income tax cuts and not tax cuts to the wealthy.

Mnuchin was pressed on how the American people would know if Trump benefited from his tax plan if the president doesn’t release his tax returns.

“I think the American public will be comfortable with the information they have,” Mnuchin said.

“We’re going to make sure that there’s the proper rules. There’s going to be full transparency as we go through the legislative process,” he said.

He reiterated that the tax plan is about creating middle income tax cuts.

Trump and congressional Republicans last week rolled out a sweeping tax overhaul proposal on that won immediate praise from conservatives.

The president stressed that the benefits would go to the middle class, not the wealthy.
