Trump hails ‘tremendous progress’ in Puerto Rico

President Trump hailed the “tremendous progress” in Puerto Rico as he returned to the White House on Sunday.

“We’re doing really well on Puerto Rico. I’ll be going there on Tuesday. Tremendous progress being made,” Trump told reporters, according to a pool report.

“We’re getting the roads open, we’re getting a lot of things done — really at a record clip. So we’re very happy with that. And I’ll be going there on Tuesday.”

Trump made the comments as he returned from a weekend at his golf club in Bedminster, N.J. Earlier Sunday, he dedicated the trophy at the Presidents Cup golf tournament to victims of the recent hurricanes that have hit the U.S.

Trump’s administration is facing criticism for not doing enough to help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane Maria, which hit the island more than a week ago.

The territory is largely without power and more than half of the island doesn’t have access to drinking water. Residents are facing food shortages and a collapsed infrastructure, and local officials say the situation is becoming a humanitarian crisis.

Trump and officials in his administration have defended their response, saying they have sent resources and assistance to the island in response to the natural disaster.

Trump and first lady Melania Trump will travel to Puerto Rico on Tuesday.
