Poll: Public confidence in media rises as trust in Trump falls

Public trust in the news media is increasing as trust in the Trump administration decreases, new data from Reuters-Ipsos reveals.

A poll released Tuesday found that 48 percent of adults surveyed say they have a “great deal” or “some” confidence in the press, a 9-point increase from last November. Forty-five percent say they have “hardly any” confidence in the press, down from 51 percent.

The Reuters-Ipsos data also show that public confidence in President Trump has decreased among both Republicans and Democrats since the president took office.

Trump’s battle with the media has been ongoing since his campaign. He has called the press “the enemy of the American people” and continues to target negative press coverage, which he calls “fake news,” on Twitter and in speeches.

In one recent tweet, the president accused CNN and NBC of not covering the recovery efforts in Puerto Rico fairly.
