Trump: Las Vegas shooter ‘was a sick man’

President Trump on Tuesday called the shooter who fired on a crowded music festival in Las Vegas on Sunday a “very, very sick” and “demented” individual.

“He was a sick man, a demented man,” Trump told reporters at the White House. “A lot of problems, I guess, and we’re looking into him very, very seriously. But we’re dealing with a very, very sick individual.”

The president’s comments came a day after he condemned the mass shooting “an act of pure evil.”

At least 59 people were killed and 527 others were injured on Sunday night when Stephen Paddock, a 64-year-old retiree, opened fire on a crowd at the Route 91 Harvest Festival from his hotel room on the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay.

Paddock had apparently smashed out two of the room’s windows to carry out the attack. Police say he was found dead in the hotel room when SWAT teams stormed the building.

Trump addressed the attack in a solemn address on Monday, in which he quoted scripture and offered his condolences to the families of victims.

“We join together in sadness, shock and grief,” Trump said. “It was an act of pure evil.”

He is expected to travel to Las Vegas on Wednesday to meet with first responders and victims’ families.
