Dem mega-donor Steyer: Mueller probe shows ‘lawlessness’ of Trump administration

Billionaire Democratic mega-donor Tom Steyer said Saturday that reported charges in special counsel Robert Mueller’s Russia probe show the “lawlessness” of President Trump’s administration.

In an interview with MSNBC, Steyer asserted that Mueller’s investigation changes little, because Trump had already met the grounds for impeachment.

“Well, I think the Mueller investigation doesn’t really change anything. It throws fuel onto a fire that’s already burning,” Steyer said.

“[It] shows the kind of lawlessness this administration has exhibited from the very beginning,” he added.

The Democratic donor was weighing in on reports that the first charges had been filed in the special counsel’s probe into ties between Trump campaign associates and Russia.

Steyer recently launched a $10 million national ad campaign calling for Trump’s impeachment. On Saturday, Steyer warned that Congress shouldn’t wait to impeach Trump until after Mueller’s investigation concludes.

“He is putting the health and safety of Americans at risk,” Steyer said. “He’s attacking the American people from his post at the White House on almost a daily basis so we really can’t wait for the investigation because he’s already a danger and he’s met the basis for impeachment.”

Trump responded to the ad campaign in a tweet Friday, calling Steyer “wacky and unhinged.”

“Wacky & totally unhinged Tom Steyer, who has been fighting me and my Make America Great Again agenda from beginning, never wins elections!” the president tweeted.

Steyer responded with a Twitter thread of his own, vowing to continue to fight Trump’s “racism and corporate groveling.”

“I have been fighting your racism and corporate groveling from the beginning—and always will,” Steyer responded. “Americans across the board know you’re a danger to the people of this country. @NancyPelosi @SenSchumer it’s time to take a stand.”

The billionaire California businessman has targeted Democratic leaders with Facebook ads demanding they take a stand on Trump’s impeachment.

“Our Democratic leadership has a moral responsibility to do what’s right,” one Facebook ad reads, with a photo of House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-Md.). “Add your name to my petition urging Whip Steny Hoyer to impeach Trump.”

Despite the pressure from Steyer and others in the Democratic Party, leaders in Congress have been reluctant to throw their support behind impeachment procedures.

“I think the leader and I have made it very clear that impeachment … is premature at this point in time,” Hoyer said, according to the Washington Examiner. “It’s not necessarily off the table at some time in the future, but is premature at this point in time.”
