Melania spox: She ‘acts independently from her husband’

Melania Trump acts “independently from her husband,” and doesn’t feel it necessary to reconcile her anti-bullying initiatives with President Trump’s more bombastic rhetoric, a spokeswoman for the first lady told CNN.

Trump, who has taken up bullying prevention as a cause since entering the East Wing, has faced accusations of hypocrisy from some critics, who point to her husband’s behavior on Twitter as an example of bullying.

But asked by CNN this week if the first lady felt the need to reconcile the alleged disparity, spokeswoman Stephanie Grisham said she did not.

“Mrs. Trump is independent and acts independently from her husband,” Grisham said. “She does what she feels is right and knows that she has a real opportunity through her role as first lady to have a positive impact on the lives of children. Her only focus is to effect change within our next generation.”

The first lady also reportedly manages her own social media accounts, a White House official told CNN. Trump has often chimed in on certain matters before her husband has. After violence broke out in August during white nationalist protests in Charlottesville, Va., for example, Trump tweeted on the matter before the president.

“Our country encourages freedom of speech, but let’s communicate w/o hate in our hearts. No good comes from violence,” she wrote on Twitter at the time.

“She is her own person,” the White House official told CNN. “She operates the account herself and pays close attention to which events warrant comment, and which do not.”
