Trump, Republicans to discuss DACA plan on Thursday: report

President Trump will meet with top Republicans at the White House on Thursday to discuss a possible fix for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, which the administration canceled earlier this year, according to Politico.

At least a half-dozen GOP senators, including Judiciary Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) will attend, Politico reported on Tuesday.

Trump announced in September that he was giving Congress until March of 2018 to pass a legislative solution for DACA recipients before the program will be terminated.

“The purpose of the meeting is for us to hear from the president his views of some of the thoughts that we have,” Grassley told Politico. “I can’t say there’s much progress being made, because we’ve got to sit down with the Democrats. There’s no way a partisan bill is going to pass.”

Trump said earlier this month that it would be “wonderful to solve the DACA problem,” but that the administration needs “to get something in return.”

“A lot of these people are in the military, they have jobs, they have this, that — it’s a very — I fully understand it,” Trump said. “But if we’re going to do something, we have to get something in return. And what I want is tremendous border regulation, I want the wall, and we’re going to get other things.

“We’re going to see if we can work something out. Now, whether or not we do, I don’t know. But it would be wonderful to solve the DACA problem,” he added.

In early October the administration released a set of immigration principles that it would require for any immigration deal to be signed into law. The requirements include a border wall and tougher security on the nation’s southern border, both of which Democrats have rejected out of hand.

Trump tweeted in September that DACA recipients should not worry about being deported during the six-month period before the program is ended.

“For all of those (DACA) that are concerned about your status during the 6 month period, you have nothing to worry about — No action!” the president tweeted last month.
