Poll: More Americans think Trump committed a crime than think he didn’t

Nearly half of Americans think President Trump committed a crime during the 2016 presidential race, according to a new poll released Thursday.

The ABC News-Washington Post poll found that 49 percent of those surveyed said it was likely that Trump committed a crime in connection with “possible Russian attempts to influence the election.” Forty-four percent said it was unlikely.

When split along party lines, 73 percent of Democrats say it is likely Trump broke the law. More than three-quarters of Republicans, 77 percent, say it’s unlikely.

The poll also found that 51 percent of Americans think Trump is not cooperating with special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. Just 37 percent said Trump is cooperating, and 13 percent said they have no opinion.

A large majority of those polled, 58 percent, also said they approve of Mueller’s handling of the investigation. Just 28 percent said they disapprove.

Along party lines, 78 percent of Democrats said they approve of Mueller’s handling of the investigation, while just 38 percent of Republicans approve of the special counsel’s probe, according to the poll.

The poll was conducted from Oct. 30 to Nov. 1 among a sample of 714 adults and has a margin of error of 4 percentage points.

The poll follows Monday’s indictments in Mueller’s investigation. Former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was charged with multiple counts, including conspiracy against the United States and money laundering, related to his work for a pro-Russia political party in Ukraine. His former business associate, Richard Gates, was also indicted.

It was also announced Monday that former Trump campaign adviser George Papadopoulos pleaded guilty earlier this month to lying to FBI agents during the investigation.
