Seth Meyers: Trump should have fired DeVos before Tillerson

“Late Night” host Seth Meyers on Tuesday weighed in on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson’s ouster, suggesting that President Trump should have fired Education Secretary Betsy DeVos instead.

“If you are going to fire Cabinet secretaries for being bad at their jobs, let me refer you to Betsy DeVos’s appearance on ‘60 Minutes,’ ” Meyers said on Tuesday night. “Not only was she wildly uninformed but 60 minutes was also her longest work day so far.”

The comedian’s comment was a reference to an interview DeVos did with CBS’s “60 Minutes” on Sunday night, in which the Education secretary struggled to answer basic questions regarding schools in her home state of Michigan. The interview drew ridicule on social media and led DeVos on Tuesday to suggest the news program had purposely edited the interview to make her look bad.

Meyers’s comment on Tuesday night came during a segment in which he poked fun at Trump for removing Tillerson via Twitter earlier that day. The comedian said that Tillerson’s ouster and the resignation of Trump’s economic adviser Gary Cohn hopefully mark the “end of this myth that serious people can rein in Donald Trump.”

Meyers also jabbed Tillerson, saying that if the White House was a fraternity in an ’80s movie Tillerson would be the dean.

“And the dean never wins in an ’80s movie,” Meyers said.

Trump removed Tillerson on Tuesday and announced CIA Director Mike Pompeo would be taking the helm of the State Department.

Cohn, a supporter of free trade, said he would leave the White House after Trump announced he would be imposing tariffs on imported steel and aluminum.

Tillerson’s ouster had been rumored for months, as Trump and Tillerson rarely seemed to be on the same page concerning the White House’s foreign policy, but the news still came as a shock to most in Washington.

The president said his decision was based on disagreements with Tillerson that included diplomacy with North Korea, the announced tariffs and the Iran nuclear deal.
