“HUGE crowd today in Georgia! Karen & I were honored to walk with my mom Nancy in the Savannah #StPatricksDay Parade. Thanks Mayor DeLoach for hosting us & grateful to all who turned out. Happy St. Patrick’s Day!” Pence wrote on Twitter.

Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan issued a statement Saturday afternoon recognizing Ireland’s “remarkable contributions to the United States” and the strong relationship between the two countries.

“Throughout American history, men and women of Irish descent have had a deep and lasting impact on our country. Since our founding, these men and women have helped shape and strengthen America, including as signers of the Declaration of Independence, presidents, military leaders, authors, business titans, and much more,” Sullivan wrote. “Irish fortitude, leadership, creativity, and entrepreneurship are woven into the very fabric of the United States.”
Sullivan is serving as acting Secretary of State while the State Department awaits the Senate confirmation of CIA Director Mike Pompeo to replace Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was fired this week.
