FEMA director: Puerto Rico ‘running out of time’ before hurricane season

Puerto Rico is “running out of time” to prepare for the next hurricane season and recover from the last, according to the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

“We’re running out of time,” said Brock Long, FEMA’s administrator, according to The Associated Press. “We have a long way to go.”

FEMA says Puerto Rico may need up to $50 billion more in repairs and protective measures before hurricane season officially begins on June 1.

The funds, which would add to the billions of dollars in disaster relief previously provided by Congress, would go toward further repairing and buffering the island’s infrastructure and electrical grid for more storms. 

FEMA is currently stockpiling millions of meals and liters of water in preparation for what could be another disastrous storm season, and will oversee an emergency response training session with government officials in mid-June, according to the AP.
