Trump to host German chancellor

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit the White House next week to meet with President Trump, the White House announced Wednesday.

Trump will host Merkel on April 27. The two will hold an “extended set of bilateral meetings,” and will hold a press conference in the Rose Garden.

The White House called the relationship between Germany and the U.S. a “bedrock of the transatlantic relationship and the NATO Alliance.”

Next week’s meeting will mark Merkel’s second trip to the White House since Trump took office and her first since she was reelected to a fourth term in September.

Her visit will come just a few days after Trump hosts French President Emmanuel Macron for the first state dinner of Trump’s presidency.

Trump is hosting Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe on Wednesday at Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

The relationship between Trump and Merkel got off to an icy start after the president did not shake the German chancellor’s hand during their first meeting.

Trump’s stances have in many cases been the opposite of Merkel’s, such as when he withdrew the U.S. from the Paris climate accords or threatened to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal.
