Trump: CIA wants Haspel to lead it into ‘America’s bright and glorious future’

President Trump praised his nominee for CIA director early Tuesday, saying that the agency wants Gina Haspel to lead it “into America’s bright and glorious future.”

“Gina Haspel, my highly respected nominee to lead the CIA, is being praised for the fact that she has been, and alway will be, TOUGH ON TERROR!” the president wrote on Twitter.

Haspel, whom Trump tapped to serve as his CIA director when he nominated former Director Mike Pompeo to be the new secretary of State, will appear Wednesday in front of the Senate Intelligence Committee as part of her confirmation process. She is expected to face tough scrutiny from lawmakers over her role in the agency’s detention and interrogation program.

The White House last week ramped up its efforts to support Haspel’s nomination. But the career CIA official reportedly offered last week to retract her nomination.

Trump has praised Haspel for her work at the agency and accused Democrats of trying to obstruct her nomination because she is “too tough on terror.”
