Trump orders flags to half-staff after Texas school shooting

President Trump on Friday ordered U.S. flags to be flown at half-staff to honor the victims of that morning’s deadly shooting at a Texas high school.

In a proclamation, Trump said public buildings and military bases should fly their flags at half-staff until sunset next Tuesday.

“Our Nation grieves with those affected by the shooting at Santa Fe High School in Texas,” Trump wrote. “May God heal the injured and may God comfort the wounded, and may God be with the victims and with the victims’ families.”

Earlier on Friday, the president condemned the “absolutely horrific attack” and pledged to take steps to prevent future school shootings.

“My administration is determined to do everything in our power to protect our students, secure our schools and to keep weapons out of the hands of those who pose a threat to themselves and to others,” he said.

Ten people were killed and 10 others were wounded when a gunman opened fire at the high school in southeastern Texas. Authorities say they have a 17-year-old student in custody who is suspected of carrying out the shooting.

The massacre comes just three months after another shooting at a Parkland, Fla., high school left 17 people dead, an outburst of violence that shook the nation and revived a debate over the nation’s gun laws.
