Giuliani: I haven’t spoken with Trump in a ‘couple weeks’

President Trump’s lawyer Rudy Giuliani said Tuesday that he hasn’t spoken with Trump in a “couple weeks,” even as he continues to speak to the media about the president and his potential interview with special counsel Robert Mueller.

Giuliani told BuzzFeed News that while he’s not talking to Trump, “people from our office are,” According to the lawyer, “correspondence” between the president and his office happens “a couple times a week.”

Giuliani’s comments come amid allegations from both he and Trump that an FBI informant spied on the Trump campaign during the 2016 presidential election.

Giuliani told BuzzFeed that former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper said the FBI was “spying on the Russians and, in the course of spying on the Russians, they ended up spying on the Trump campaign.”

Clapper said in an interview Tuesday on “The View” that the FBI was not spying on the Trump campaign, but on “what the Russians were doing.”

In a separate interview with CNN on Wednesday, Clapper said his comments had been taken out of context and that Trump was “deliberately spinning the narrative that whereby he’s a victim of the ‘deep state’ spying on him or spying on the campaign, which is not the case.”

Trump on Tuesday quoted Clapper in an early morning tweet Wednesday, alleging that Clapper had said that the FBI spied on the campaign when he had not.

“What we were concerned about and what particularly the FBI but everybody else — but particularly the FBI was concerned about was the Russians and what they were doing to penetrate or influence the campaign,” Clapper told CNN, according to Buzzfeed. He said the FBI was “simply doing their jobs.”

Giuliani had told The Washington Post earlier Wednesday that he thinks Trump should interview with Mueller in his probe into potential ties between the Trump campaign and Russia during the 2016 election.

The move marked a sharp departure from Giuliani’s previous statements. For weeks, he had noted that he didn’t think the president should agree to the questioning.

But the lawyer pushed back against the portrayal of his comments as a reversal during the interview with BuzzFeed.

“No no no no no. No, I didn’t say that,” Giuliani told the publication. “That doesn’t mean we’ve reversed though. That’s always been true.”

The lawyer had told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday that if he were to decide on Trump doing the interview right now, he would decide against it.
