Poll: Support overwhelming for Trump’s decision to end family separations

Nearly three-quarters of U.S. voters support President Trump’s decision to end migrant family separations at the border with Mexico, according to a Politico/Morning Consult poll released Wednesday.

Seventy-four percent of voters back the president’s move last week to end the separations, which stemmed from his administration’s “zero-tolerance” policy on illegal immigration, while just 15 percent oppose the move. 

The “zero-tolerance” policy calls for the prosecution of all migrants that are apprehended after crossing illegally into the U.S. and led to thousands of children being separated from their parents.

Amid public outrage, Trump signed an executive order allowing families to be detained together. Still, children can only be held in custody for a maximum of 20 days, raising questions about how the administration planned to implement the order while still enforcing its “zero-tolerance” policy.

According to the Politico/Morning Consult poll, fewer than half of voters — 44 percent — approve of the Trump administration’s handling of immigration. Conversely, 48 percent say they disapprove. 

Voters also trust Democrats more than Republicans when it comes to immigration. Forty-one percent of respondents said they trust congressional Democrats’ handling of immigration, while 37 percent put their faith in Republicans on the issue.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll surveyed 1,989 from June 22-24. Its margin of error is 2 percentage points.
