Pence on Dems impeaching Trump: ‘I take them at their word’

Vice President Pence says he believes Democrats will try to impeach President Trump if they regain the House in November’s midterm elections, despite a lack of enthusiasm for the idea among the party’s congressional leadership.

“They’re all talking about it, and so I take them at their word, even though some of them have decided to not talk about that quite so much,” Pence told the Christian Broadcasting Network in an interview published Wednesday.

{mosads}While some Democratic lawmakers have moved to begin impeachment proceedings against Trump, top officials such as House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) have remained wary, saying there isn’t yet evidence demanding such a drastic move.

“It’s not a priority on the agenda going forward unless something else comes forward,” Pelosi told The Associated Press last week after Trump’s former attorney Michael Cohen implicated him as an unnamed coconspirator for election fraud.

In January, the House overwhelmingly rejected a procedural move on articles of impeachment introduced by Rep. Al Green (D-Texas).

Pence also seemed confident in the GOP’s platform heading into a midterm election cycle, in which many prognosticators predict Democrats have the upper hand.

“Democrats essentially are saying, ‘We want more obstruction, we want more of the kind of controversy in Washington, D.C.’ It doesn’t really put anybody to work here in Michigan or anywhere across the country, doesn’t make our country safer or more prosperous,” he said.
