Watch live: Biden visits Maui in wake of deadly wildfires
President Biden is traveling to Maui on Monday to survey the destruction caused by deadly wildfires.
The White House said Biden is scheduled to meet with first responders and announce the appointment of Bob Fenton, a federal coordinator, to oversee long-term recovery efforts on the island.
Fenton served as the White House’s coordinator for the mpox response as the virus spread in the United States in 2022. Fenton also earlier worked on setting up mass vaccination sites in the COVID-19 response.
According to emergency response officials, more than 110 people died and more than 800 are still missing.
The event is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. EDT.
