Harris on Trump charges: ‘I believe that people should be held accountable under the law’

Vice President Harris on Wednesday said people should be held accountable for efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 election when questioned on the charges against former President Trump.

“Let the evidence, the facts, take it where it may,” Harris said in an interview with The Associated Press in Jakarta, Indonesia.

“I spent the majority of my career as a prosecutor,” she added. “I believe that people should be held accountable under the law. And when they break the law, there should be accountability.”

Harris was interviewed while representing the U.S. at a summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations in place of President Biden.

Biden and the vice president have largely avoided commenting on Trump’s legal troubles, but Biden has recently stepped up his attacks on Trump on his presidential record.

Trump, the current front-runner for the 2020 Republican presidential nomination, has been indicted by federal prosecutors for efforts to remain in power after losing the 2020 election to Biden. He has also been charged in Georgia for alleged efforts to overturn the state’s 2020 election results.

The former president pleaded not guilty last week to all 13 charges in the Georgia case.

Trump faces a combined 91 criminal counts — across four indictments — and has also pleaded not guilty in the New York hush money case and the handling of classified documents in a Florida case.
