Ex-Trump social media director: I said ‘oh no’ when Trump figured out how to tweet
President Trump’s former social media director said his first reaction when he learned Trump tweeted by himself was: “Oh no.”
Justin McConney served as the director of social media for the Trump Organization from 2011 until 2017 and originally drafted and sent all of Trump’s tweets for him, until one day in 2013 when he said he was surprised when he saw a tweet come straight from Trump.
“The moment I found out Trump could tweet himself was comparable to the moment in ‘Jurassic Park’ when Dr. Grant realized that velociraptors could open doors,” McConney told Politico in an interview. “I was like, ‘Oh no.’ “
{mosads}The tweet was a simple and straight forward one, with Trump thanking actress Sherri Shepherd for her kind words about him while appearing on “The View.”
McConney said he came into the office the next day and asked other staffers if they helped Trump write the tweet, to which they all said no.
Now, Trump is more than proficient at tweeting by himself, often multiple times a day about a variety of topics.
McConney, who left the Trump Organization last year, said Trump needs to go back to what made his Twitter feed compelling in the first place.
“He needs to return to engaging directly with his fans again,” McConney said.
McConney said he was the one who got Trump to start using social media, particularly Twitter, when he was a 24-year-old fresh out of film school.
“He seemed to be familiar with the names but not what you could do with them,” he said of Trump’s knowledge of the social media platforms.
Soon, McConney said he began to encourage Trump to develop a brand and personality on Twitter.
“I wanted the Donald Trump who is on Howard Stern, commenting on anything and everything,” he said.
Trump quickly began using his social media presence to weigh in on a number of subjects, while picking fights with the likes of Rosie O’Donnell and Alex Rodriguez.
Now, Trump says he does not call it tweeting, instead referring to it as simply social media.
“That’s my only form of communicating, really, other than having a press conference every hour,” Trump said in an October interview with Fox Business.
