Trump open to visiting Turkey in 2019 but no ‘definite’ plans, White House says

President Trump is open to visiting Turkey in the future but the White House does not have any “definite” plans for the trip right now, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley said on Monday night.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has invited President Trump to visit Turkey next year, Gidley said. 

{mosads}”While nothing definite is being planned, the president is open to a potential meeting in the future,” he added. 

The statement from Gidley comes after a Turkish presidential spokesman reportedly said earlier in the day that Trump had accepted Erdoğan’s invitation to visit the country next year.

Presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalin told reporters that Trump wanted to visit Turkey in 2019 though no date had been set, The Associated Press reported.

Trump on Monday said that Erdoğan had “very strongly informed” him that Turkey will “eradicate whatever is left of ISIS in Syria” after the U.S. withdraws its troops.

The president over the weekend had a phone call with Erdoğan in which the two discussed the withdrawal of U.S. forces from Syria.

Erdoğan during that call, which Trump called “long and productive,” extended the invitation for Trump to come to Turkey.
