Trump quotes Obama, Clinton in wall pitch

President Trump quoted former President Obama and his 2016 Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton in a series of tweets early Sunday promoting his planned border wall, adding that the structure would stop “99% of our illegal Border crossings.”

“ ‘We simply cannot allow people to pour into the United States undetected, undocumented, unchecked…’ Barrack Obama, 2005. I voted, when I was a Senator, to build a barrier to try to prevent illegal immigrants from coming in…’ Hillary Clinton, 2015,” Trump tweeted initially.

“The only reason they do not want to build a Wall is that Walls Work! 99% of our illegal Border crossings will end, crime in our Country will go way down and we will save billions of dollars a year! A properly planned and constructed Wall will pay for itself many times a year!” he added in a subsequent post.

{mosads}Funding for a wall along the border with Mexico, which Trump repeatedly promised during the presidential campaign, is at the heart of a partial government shutdown that has stretched into a third week.

Vice President Pence and top members of the administration met with Democratic congressional staffers on Saturday to discuss a potential end to the shutdown.

A Democratic source said Pence did not budge from the $5.7 billion Trump has requested for the wall.

“Democratic staff in the room were clear that White House must support reopening government immediately and that it will grow increasingly hard to start formal negotiations with government closed,” the source said. “Administration officials refused.”

Trump tweeted after the meeting that “not much headway” was made, adding that another round of talks was set for Sunday.

The president will travel to Camp David Sunday morning for meetings on border security and other topics with senior White House staff.

White House acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney said during an interview set to air Sunday that Trump is offering to take a concrete wall “off the table” to compromise with Democrats.
