Trump loses support from key constituency of white people without a college degree: poll

President Trump appears to be losing support of white Americans without college degrees, a consituency that has been previously reliable, according to new polling.

Forty-five percent of whites without college degrees approved of the job done by Trump in a new CNN poll released Monday, compared to 54 percent who had backed him in a poll conducted in December.

{mosads}A Quinnipiac University National Poll also released Monday shows a similar trend.

In that survey, approval for Trump among non-college educated whites dropped from 56 to 53 percent, with Trump still getting a majority of support from the group. Disapproval rose from 37 to 43 percent.

The partial government shutdown, which entered its 26th day on Wednesday, may be a factor in the declining support. 

Forty-five percent of white people without college degrees blamed the shutdown on Trump, according to CNN’s poll.

CNN surveyed 848 adults between Jan. 10 and 11, with a margin of error of 4.1 points for the sample.

The Quinnipiac poll found that 56 percent of voters blame Trump and congressional Republicans for the shutdown, while 36 percent pointed the finger at congressional Democrats.

A Washington Post–ABC News poll taken between Jan. 8–11 had similar results, with 53 percent saying Trump and congressional Republicans are mostly to blame for the shutdown, and 29 percent blaming Democrats.
