Trump says McCain’s book ‘bombed’: report
President Trump reportedly took a shot at the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) at a private lunch with television anchors, saying his book “bombed.”
The New York Times reported that Trump met with the television anchors just hours before his State of the Union address to both chambers of Congress, with sources in the room telling the Times of Trump’s comments regarding McCain.
{mosads}“By the way, he wrote a book and the book bombed,” Trump reportedly said, apparently referring to McCain’s book, “The Restless Wave: Good Times, Just Causes, Great Fights, and Other Appreciations.”
McCain was critical of Trump in the book, which was published just months before he passed away.
Trump was at odds with the Senate stalwart ever since McCain voted against Trump’s attempt to repeal the Affordable Care Act, more commnly known as ObamaCare.
McCain, who unsuccessfully ran for president in 2008, was a frequent and vocal critic of Trump.
Trump also lashed out at prominent Democrats during the closed-door lunch, knocking former Vice President Joe Biden as “dumb” and calling Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) “a nasty son of a bitch.”
The White House did not immediately respond to a request for comment from The Hill.
McCain’s daughter Meghan criticized Trump’s words in a tweet.
The president’s obsession with my father 6 months after his death is pathetic and telling – even at a time when he should be focusing on his message to the American public and the state of our union – the greatness of my father’s life and legacy haunts you. https://t.co/JLgHoZwCKD
