Trump accuses Democrats of crime amid rising calls for impeachment
President Trump lashed out at Democrats on Wednesday after a press conference by special counsel Robert Mueller accelerated calls for impeachment on Capitol Hill and among Democratic 2020 candidates.
In a tweet, the president accused Democrats, without providing evidence, of committing a “crime” related to Mueller’s investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election. He also blasted the continued congressional investigations into his administration as a “WITCH-HUNT.”
“How do you impeach a Republican President for a crime that was committed by the Democrats? WITCH-HUNT!” he wrote.

Trump has frequently accused top officials at the FBI and the Justice Department under the Obama administration of opening an investigation into his campaign without evidence and basing their probe off of an unverified dossier funded in part by Hillary Clinton’s campaign.{mosads}
Former top figures at both agencies have maintained the investigation into the Trump campaign began after George Papadopoulos, an aide to the campaign, told an Australian diplomat that Russia was in possession of stolen emails from the DNC and Clinton’s campaign.
The Justice Department revealed last month that it had assigned a team of prosecutors to look into the issue, as well as the FBI’s general conduct related to the investigation.
“I am reviewing the conduct of the investigation and trying to get my arms around all the aspects of the counterintelligence investigation that was conducted during the summer of 2016,” Attorney General William Barr told a House subcommittee in April.
