Trump to face thousands of protesters during UK visit
President Trump is expected to be met with thousands of protesters, some of whom could be carrying milkshakes, for a “Carnival of Resistance” against him during his state visit the United Kingdom next week, Bloomberg reports.
According to the publication, thousands of people have said they will be attending demonstrations protesting the president’s visit during his coming three-day trip to the U.K.
{mosads}One Facebook page for the “Together Against Trump” protest so far has 7,600 people committed to attending its demonstration in London’s Trafalgar Square on Tuesday and over 33,000 people who have expressed interest in joining.
Another group, called the Milkshakes Against Trump Bloc, also reportedly has over 1,000 people who have expressed interest in attending its demonstration, which comes shortly after British politician Nigel Farage was hit by a milkshake by a protester earlier this month.
Protesters have also been working to secure another balloon depicting Trump as an orange baby, which flew during his visit to the U.K. last year, for next week, according to Bloomberg.
Following his visit last year, Trump said he believed London citizens “like me a lot” despite a number of protests planned in the U.K. countering his visit then. At the time, he also said the demonstrations made him feel “unwelcome.”
“I used to love London as a city,” Trump said. “I haven’t been there in a long time. But when they make you feel unwelcome, why would I stay there?”
The Stop Trump Coalition, one of the group’s behind next week’s planned protests opposing Trump’s visit, told Bloomberg that the demonstrations are “about sending a strong message that people in the U.K. don’t accept the divisive right-wing policies that Trump stands for, and that inviting him for a state visit is totally inappropriate.”
The London Metropolitan Police told Bloomberg in a statement that security for Trump’s visit will be “significant.”
“This will be a multi-agency policing operation with a very experienced command team in place,” the force added.
