Trump offers condolences after Virginia Beach shooting

President Trump on Saturday offered condolences to the Virginia Beach, Va., community after 12 people were killed in a shooting at the city’s municipal center on Friday afternoon.

Trump also said he spoke with Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam (D) over the phone on Friday evening.

“Spoke to Virginia Governor @RalphNortham last night, and the Mayor and Vice Mayor of Virginia Beach this morning, to offer condolences to that great community,” he tweeted. “The Federal Government is there, and will be, for whatever they may need. God bless the families and all!”

Virginia Beach Police Chief James Cervera said that at about 4 p.m. on Friday, a gunman “began to indiscriminately fire upon all the victims” using a .45-caliber handgun with extended magazines and a suppressor. In addition to the 12 killed, four people were injured.{mosads}

The suspected shooter, identified Saturday as DeWayne Craddock, 40, a public utilities engineer, was also killed in a “long-term gun battle” with four police officers, officials said. 

Officials said 11 of the people killed in the shooting were city employees and one was a contractor. They were identified on Saturday.
