Theresa May to give Trump 1941 draft of Churchill-Roosevelt Atlantic Charter

U.K. Prime Minister Theresa May is set to give President Trump Winston Churchill’s personal typescript draft of the 1941 Atlantic Charter, Downing Street announced Tuesday.

The “most secret” copy includes Churchill’s handwritten notes on the international agreement which outlined post-war goals with former President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

This is a copy of Churchill’s personal typescript draft of 1941’s Atlantic Charter – setting out his and President Roosevelt’s goals for a post-war world.

The charter, signed by the two leaders in August 1941, outlined eight “common principles” that both countries committed to supporting after the Second World War, including the liberalization of trade and international labor and welfare standards. 

The document also committed both countries to supporting the restoration of self-government for all countries that had been occupied during the conflict.

Trump has publicly acknowledged his admiration for Churchill. He had a bust of the former prime minister reinstalled in the Oval Office on the first day of his presidency and hosted a screening of “Darkest Hour,” which depicts Churchill’s early days in office, at the White House in 2017.

Also during his state visit this week, Queen Elizabeth II gave the president an abridged first edition of Churchill’s “The Second World War” and a three-piece pen set. 

The president and first lady in return presented the monarch with a silver and silk poppy flower brooch from Tiffany & Co.
