Poll: Support for impeachment proceedings grows among Democrats

Support has risen among Democratic voters for Congress to begin impeachment proceedings against President Trump, according to a new poll released by Politico/Morning Consult.

Sixty-seven percent of self-identified Democrats said lawmakers should begin the process to oust Trump — an 8 point increase since April.

Eighteen percent of Democrats in the new survey said lawmakers should not begin impeaching Trump, and 15 percent said they did not know.{mosads}

The increase comes after the president faced bipartisan backlash for his comments about intelligence from foreign governments.

Trump told ABC News last week that he would “maybe” call the FBI should a foreign operative offer him dirt on a political opponent.

“I think maybe you do both,” Trump said when asked whether he would call the FBI or listen if Russia, China or another foreign government reached out.

“I think you might want to listen. There’s nothing wrong with listening,” he continued. “It’s not an interference. They have information. I think I’d take it. If I thought there was something wrong, I’d go maybe to the FBI.”

The majority of Democrats polled — 52 percent — said that launching impeachment proceedings against Trump should be a “top priority” for lawmakers. Earlier this month, 46 percent of Democratic respondents said the same in a survey.

The Politico/Morning Consult poll was conducted June 14-16, surveying 1,992 registered voters. The margin of sampling error is 2 percentage points.
