Trump orders flags to half-staff in honor of Supreme Court Justice Stevens
President Trump has ordered U.S. flags to fly at half-staff in memory of retired Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens, who died on Tuesday.
Trump on Wednesday issued a proclamation stating flags on all government buildings, diplomatic posts and military bases should be lowered on the day of Stevens’s interment “as a mark of respect for the memory and longstanding service of” the late justice.{mosads}
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has announced that Stevens will lie in state in the Capitol Rotunda next Monday, followed by a Tuesday memorial service.
Stevens, 99, passed away in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from complications from a stroke, according to the Supreme Court. He became a leader of the court’s liberal wing during his 35 years on the bench. In 2010, former President Obama nominated Justice Elena Kagan to replace him.
The White House praised Stevens for his “humility, legal acumen, and affection for his beloved Chicago Cubs” in a statement issued Tuesday night following news of his passing.
