Anti-Defamation League says ‘send her back’ chants ‘the sound of illiberalism, intolerance’

Anti-Defamation League CEO Jonathan Greenblatt said the chants of “send her back” at President Trump’s Wednesday night rally indicate a danger “to all Americans.”

“This is the sound of illberalism, intolerance. Listen closely: it’s a danger not just to immigrants and minorities but to all Americans,” Greenblatt tweeted Thursday, with a clip of the rally chant.

The North Carolina crowd broke out into the chant after Trump renewed an attack on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.), a freshman representative who is Muslim and was born in Somalia.

It followed days of Trump defending his tweets targeting Democratic Reps. Omar, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (N.Y.), Ayanna Pressley (Mass.) and Rashida Tlaib (Mich.).{mosads}

Trump told the representatives to “go back” to where they came from, a message widely denounced by Democrats and a few Republicans as racist.

All four of the freshmen representatives are women of color. Only Omar was born outside of the U.S.

The “send her back” chant set off a new round of backlash against the president for stoking racial division in America.
