Twitter apologizes after ‘Die Trump’ trends in Turkey

Twitter removed the phrase “Mahvolursun Trump,” which roughly translates into “Die Trump,” after it briefly trended in Turkey Monday.

Sunday night, the White House announced it would be removing remaining U.S. forces from Syria’s northern border, a move that fulfills one of Trump’s campaign promises but also leaves the Kurds, an essential U.S. ally in fighting ISIS, vulnerable to an attack from Turkey.{mosads}

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan considers Kurdish forces known as the YPG as part of Turkish Kurdish insurgency forces and has repeatedly threatened an attack on the group.

On Monday, Trump tweeted a warning to Turkey.

“If Turkey does anything that I, in my great and unmatched wisdom, consider to be off limits, I will totally destroy and obliterate the Economy of Turkey (I’ve done before!),” Trump tweeted.

“They must, with Europe and others, watch over the captured ISIS fighters and families,” Trump continued in a second tweet.

The phrase began trending after Trump’s series of tweets.

Doğu Perinçek, chairman of Turkey’s nationalist Patriotic Party, responded with a tweet of his own.

“Mr. Trump you can destroy only USA,” Perinçek tweeted. His tweet ended with the hashtag “Mahvolursun Trump.”
