White House offers support for UK following ‘horrific’ stabbing attack

The White House offered support for the United Kingdom on Friday following a stabbing attack in London that police described as terror-related.

“President Trump has been briefed on this morning’s attack at the London Bridge and is monitoring the situation,” White House deputy press secretary Judd Deere said in the statement.

“The United States strongly condemns all horrific acts of violence on innocent people, and we pledge our full support to our ally, the United Kingdom,” the statement added.

Metropolitan Police and other authorities rushed to the London Bridge around 2 p.m. local time.

Police said that multiple people were wounded in the attack, but it was unclear how many or what their conditions were as of Friday afternoon.

A male suspect died at the scene after being shot by officers, police said.

Assistant Commissioner for Specialist Operations Neil Basu confirmed to reporters that Metropolitan Police had declared the attack a “terrorist incident” and that the slain suspect had been wearing a “hoax explosive device.”

The last terrorist incident in the U.K. was in October when three people were stabbed by a man in a mall in Manchester. 

The statement from the White House on Friday came hours after Trump touched down in Palm Beach, Fla., where he is expected to spend the holiday weekend after his surprise Thanksgiving Day trip to Afghanistan to visit U.S. troops.

The president arrived at one of his golf properties later Friday morning, but it was unclear if his plans included golfing.
