Kellyanne Conway denounces Pelosi for ripping up Trump’s speech
White House counselor Kellyanne Conway excoriated Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) on Wednesday for ripping up President Trump’s State of the Union speech on the dais a night earlier, suggesting Pelosi be formally censured for her actions.
“I think it shows you how petty and peevish and partisan the Democratic Party has come,” Conway said on “America’s Newsroom” on Fox News. “And for all the people out there who fancy themselves the armchair psychiatrist trying to analyze certain people, they ought to shift their craft over to Nancy Pelosi.”
Conway said she believes Pelosi should be censured by the House or that the Senate should pass a resolution “denouncing her behavior last night.”
The top White House aide ridiculed Pelosi for appearing to react in real time to aspects of Trump’s speech. The Speaker could be seen mouthing the words “not true” and shaking her head “no” when Trump accused Democrats of supporting free government health care for illegal immigrants and when he claimed he would protect Medicare and Social Security.
“What is wrong with her? Who mutters to themselves through a State of the Union?” Conway said. “She looked like she was reading the Cheesecake Factory menu all night going through every single page.”
Pelosi’s ripping of the prepared remarks has dominated the conversation around Trump’s State of the Union address, which played well with his supporters and served as a platform for his reelection pitch.
Trump’s allies have hammered the Speaker and called her actions inappropriate, with the president himself retweeting several messages to that effect on Wednesday morning.
The Tuesday night address began on a fraught note when Trump appeared to snub Pelosi’s extended hand before he began speaking.
Conway downplayed that interaction on Wednesday but argued Trump would have been justified in ignoring Pelosi.
“I’m not even sure it was purposeful. I’m not even sure he noticed her or her extended hand,” Conway said. “And honestly, who cares? She’s one of the faces of impeachment.”
