Megan McCain knocks Trump over comments honoring POWs

“The View” co-host Meghan McCain on Tuesday knocked President Trump’s tweet honoring former prisoners of war after he previously attacked her father, the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), for being captured during the Vietnam War.

The president honored National Former Prisoner of War Recognition Day on his Twitter account, saying, “We pay tribute to these Patriots for their unwavering and unrelenting spirit!”

McCain resurfaced Trump’s 2015 comments about her father, saying, “No one has forgotten this is how you honor POW’s.”

Many other social media users also took to Twitter to knock the president’s treatment of John McCain, causing his name to trend on Twitter across the United States.

McCain, who died of brain cancer in August 2018, served in the Navy during the Vietnam War. In 1967, his jet was shot down and he spent the next 5 1/2 years as a prisoner of war.

“He’s not a war hero,” Trump said on the campaign trail in 2015. “He was a war hero because he was captured. I like people who weren’t captured.”

Trump has proceeded to target the late senator even after his death, slamming his 2017 vote against an effort to repeal ObamaCare.

The president stoked controversy when he waited to lower flags to half-staff following the senator’s death and escalated the issue when he claimed last year that he was not properly thanked for giving McCain “the kind of funeral that he wanted.”

Meghan McCain has long called on Trump to apologize for his remarks, taking a shot at him when she eulogized her father at his Washington, D.C., funeral service.
