Trump to travel to Camp David on Friday

President Trump will travel to Camp David on Friday, marking his first time leaving the White House since late March.

The president will depart for the Maryland-based retreat on Friday evening, according to his public schedule. Prior to that, he will hold an event recognizing the work of individuals on the front-lines of the coronavirus pandemic during a ceremony in the Blue Room.

It’s unclear how long Trump will be at Camp David or what he will do. He is scheduled to take part in a Fox News town hall event at the Lincoln Memorial on Sunday night.

The president last left the White House on March 28, when he made the short trip to Norfolk, Va., to send off a Naval hospital ship. He has otherwise remained sheltered in the nation’s capital as the coronavirus pandemic grips the nation.

But Trump has been eager to resume traveling, and the White House appears to be accommodating that desire. The president will head out west next week to visit a Honeywell factory in Arizona, and he teased an upcoming trip to Ohio in the near future.

“We’re going to start to move around, and hopefully in the not-too-distant future we’ll have some massive rallies and people will be sitting next to each other,” Trump said Wednesday.

The president is likely to look for ways to tout an economic recovery in the U.S. as states begin lifting restrictions meant to slow the spread of the coronavirus. There are more than 1 million confirmed cases of the virus in the U.S., according to Johns Hopkins data, and more than 63,000 people in the country have died of the virus.
