Harris postpones trip to Detroit

Vice President Harris has delayed a trip to Detroit that was originally scheduled for Monday as part of her ongoing tour to encourage people to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

The White House on Sunday said the trip had been delayed, though it did not say when it would be rescheduled. This would have been the first time Harris has been back to Detroit since Election Day.

Though a reason was not given for the delay, The Detroit News noted that the metro Detroit area experienced major flooding this weekend, with some part of the region getting seven inches of rain.

The News noted that the rainfall has overwhelmed much of the city’s water and sewage systems, reporting that at least 28 of the area’s freeway pump stations have been cut. Roads and freeways have been closed, and thousands have been left without power.

Other White House figures, including Harris’s husband, Doug Emhoff, and first lady Jill Biden, have been making trips around the country to encourage vaccination. Biden recently travelled to Nashville to promote vaccinations with country artist Brad Paisley.

Harris also recently traveled to the U.S.-Mexico border on Friday after widespread condemnation from Republican lawmakers for not having done so yet.

While at the border, Harris met with border agents and received a briefing on what was being done to combat transnational crimes.

“This has been a very important trip,” Harris said during a press conference while at the border. “This has been a trip that also is connected with the obvious point: If you want to deal with a problem, you can’t just deal with the symptom of the problem; you’ve got to figure out what caused it to happen.”
