Los Angeles Dodgers to visit the White House on Friday

The Los Angeles Dodgers will visit the White House on Friday, becoming the first championship team to meet with President Biden since he took office.

The defending champions will meet with Biden while they are in Washington, D.C., for a series against the Nationals, a White House spokesperson confirmed on Twitter.

The Dodgers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays in six games in last year’s World Series following a 60-game season shortened by the coronavirus pandemic.

The championship professional sports teams have traditionally made a stop to meet the sitting commander in chief, an event that dates back decades.

The Dodgers will also be the first team to visit the White House since the onset of the pandemic last year.

The practice of champions visiting the White House was thrown for a loop during the Trump administration.

No NBA champions visited the White House while Trump was in office, as the then-president traded insults with stars like LeBron James and coaches like Steve Kerr. Then-President Trump canceled a visit from the NFL’s Philadelphia Eagles after it became apparent most players would not attend.

MLB teams did continue the tradition of visiting the White House, however. The Boston Red Sox, Houston Astros and Washington Nationals each met with Trump after winning the World Series in recent years, though players on each team did decline to join.
