Biden, Harris volunteer at DC nonprofit before Thanksgiving

President Biden, Vice President Harris and their spouses volunteered at a Washington, D.C., nonprofit on Tuesday ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, preparing meals for those in need.

Biden, Harris, first lady Jill Biden and second gentleman Doug Emhoff visited D.C. Central Kitchen, which recycles food from local caterers, restaurants and hotels to provide meals for individuals who need them and for homeless shelters, after-school programs and rehabilitation clinics.

The four leaders took turns assembling meals and hearing from the head of D.C. Central Kitchen about the organization’s work in the community. Asked by reporters what he was thankful for, Biden said “the people standing right next to me,” gesturing to those working at the non-profit.

The Bidens departed for Joint Base Andrews after spending roughly 40 minutes at the nonprofit. They traveled Tuesday night to Nantucket, Mass., where they will spend the Thanksgiving holiday.

The trip to D.C. Central Kitchen came a day after the president and first lady visited troops at Fort Bragg in North Carolina for a “Friendsgiving” meal to thank them for their service.

“You’re the finest the world has ever seen and I’m so damn proud to be associated with you,” Biden said Monday. “We came because we wanted to thank you, tell you how much we care … we owe you big. Thank you.”
