Clinton, Obama vow general election unity

The two Democratic presidential candidates Wednesday night tried to assure those fearing a rift in the party that they would be united to take on presumptive Republican nominee Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) in the fall.

{mosads}“I’m going to do everything that I can possibly do” to make sure that “one of us will take the oath of office,” Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (N.Y.) said at the onset of her debate with Sen. Barack Obama (Ill.).

“I will do everything to make sure that the people who supported me will support the nominee,” the former first lady stated. Clinton added that she would go “anywhere” to make sure the Democrats win, adding that she knows that “Barack feels the same way.”

Obama also said that “the Democratic Party will come together” once the nominee is chosen.

Many party elders fear that, in a year where the electoral landscape seems to favor a Democrat, the long primary battle will leave the eventual nominee vulnerable.

Clinton and Obama also emphatically said that they believe that their respective opponent could beat McCain, though both insisted that they are the better candidate.
